Intel launched the second generation Atom processor a while back. Based on the Pineview architecture these 45nm processors cut the power consumption of the Atom platform in half. This was made possible by moving the memory controller and graphics circuit inside the processor, eliminating the northbridge. Pine Trail is the name of the platform and beside complete systems Intel has started selling barebones with motherboard and CPU.

Intel D510MO has been listed for some time, but now the delivery dates are starting to appear. The board is expected to appear around 11-17 February and prices will be as low as $70.

This gets you a mini-ITX motherboard with an integrated Atom D510 CPU. The dual-core processor operates at 1.66GHz and thanks to the low power consumption it works just fine with passive cooling.

The motherboard houses two DDR2 memory slots for up to 4GB RAM, digital audio output, several USB2.0 ports and VGA connected to the integrated graphics circuit.

Intel D510MO is an interesting choice for cheap and energy efficient surf computers, or perhaps the home server.
