Whenever a new operating system from Microsoft is released there are some who have a rule of thumb not to upgrade before the first Service Pack. This is to avoid the worst teething problems and hopefully get a bug-free operating system. Even if the new Windows 7 has received good words and is often referred to as "Vista done right", rumors of SP1 are coming.

It all started with the Russian site wzor.net, known for leaking various Microsoft software, claimed to have found information on the new service pack. They claim that the first beta tests of W7 SP1 will happen December already, and then go public beta in Spring sometime and RTM during the summer. This is based on half-decent translations from Russian, though if you know Russian better than we do don't hesitate to correct us if we're wrong.

If this is correct it puts a twist on things. When Vista lunched it took nearly a year before SP1 appeared, if Windows 7 gets an upgrade in just six-seven months it would point a change in strategy at Microsoft. Perhaps they tackle the problem with the previously mentioned rule of thumb by releasing a less extensive SP1 sooner? Either that or it has simply raised the priority of the bug catching process.
