Posted: Tue Jul 22, 2003 8:40 pm Post subject: A quick guide to watercooling |
|
|
This post is mainly directed to beginners in watercooling, but may also be useful to experienced users.
Lately, more and more people have been looking into alternative cooling solutions, and the first thing you think of is watercooling.
Of course some people want to make it extreme and buy Prometia or simmilar, but these options are expensive and usually noisy.
Watercooling however, though its not very cheap, is alot cheaper then the more extreme options (assumed you dont want to pelt-cool vga and chipset) and, my opinion, alot more fun to put up and do modification with.
When you take the final step and decide to buy watercooling, you usally have loads of options and questions:
* Should i buy separate parts or a complete kit?
* Is it hard to put togheter?
* Is the leaking-risk high?
* Is it noisy?
I'm gonna try to answer these and much more in this post.
The first thing you want to figure out is, am I gonna buy a complete kit or put togheter separate parts?
I recommend to buy separate parts, mainly cause of 2 reasons;
You get what you want and you can adjust it to your system.
The price will almost certainly be lower if you compare price / performance.
If you are inexperienced in watercooling or unsure what to do, you shouldn't really worry too much.
You dont get a manual on how to put the whole thing togheter, but thats really easy to understand. You should also get a manual to atleast waterblock and pump.
I also recommend people to buy a tank, because it does aid in performance slightly, makes refilling the system easy, and evens out any pressure.
When buying a tank, think of what kind of tank you want it to be.
Do you want it to be directly attached to the pump, or do you want the pump do be drowned in the tank, (assuming the pump can handle it), or will you connect the tank to the pump with tubing?
Personally i use a drowned eheim-pump, but this is very induvidually.
Another common question is, does it matter in what order the radiator, pump etc. comes?
It can make a slightly different, and the recomended order is: Tank/pump - Waterblock(s) - Radiator.
So is it hard to put a watercooling-system togheter?
It can be, but usually isnt. As you all know, nothing should work the first time you try it.
Its mostly about finding good locations for all the components and making sure the tubing isnt bent.
How about the leaking-situation then?
As long as you make sure everything is tight and you got tubingclips its nothing to worry about.
The noise then?
As long as you choose a low-noise-fan its, well, low-noise.
I hope you have enjoyed my little guide, and hopefully had use of it.
There is probably alot of spelling-errors since i pretty much suck at English. .

The hose clamps are (IMO) a must: there's no justification in taking that risk. |
Agreed, a copule of dollars extra and alot safer. |

Hi ppl.......i was just wondering.....don't u guys think we are moving back to the OLDEN days when they invented the mobile???......lol.....Computers are suppose to be of the future, but by the looks of it, their cooling systems ate going to be like the first model-T ford.............and the best thing of all is, IFFFFF the cooling system leaks............Goodbye Computer???........just concerned... |

Well, if it leaks, it will probably not shortcut, since the water is not normal water from the sink, it's dejonizsed or what's it called in english
And about the cooling, you can always stick with your stock cooling (normal hs/fan), but when overclocking, you need some more
And the heat generated by the CPUs is going down (well, don't look at Prescott, Intel don't know what they're doing ) with the microns _________________ Open Source > * |
