Creative managed to anger its customers more than plenty by telling driver modder daniel_k to stop distributing and modifying Creative's drivers. Something he was doing to unlock purposely locked features and fix (obvious) bugs. The word "stealing" was used by Creative and it took an awful long while before Creative responded to the criticism, but then it backed down a bit and said it was willing work with third-party developers. Wired got an e-mail from Daniel himself, where he says that, in retrospect, asking for donations was wrong. He was simply caught up in the moment.

The whole ordeal could have been handled so much smoother by Creative. Perhaps it should have just sent him a discrete e-mail instead.

The e-mail can be found over at Wired, where he quite specifically lists what he's done, what he found in the drivers and where he crossed the line.

So this guy found out that Creative purposely disabled features, created incompatibilities, and then charged customers for this?

WOW.

Regardless of all the other stuff, Creative unleashed a storm of discontent. Their response basically brought all of this to light, and now customers will know how they conduct business.

Talk about an absolute PR DISASTER. They should have hired this guy beforehand and then rode it all the way to the bank. Now their name and products are getting trashed, and this won't help the fact that their company stock has tanked over the last year or so.

Once the darling of audiophiles everywhere, Creative has just given a textbook study on the rise and fall of an industry empire, and how to have it all come crashing down around you. Wonder if they'll end up going out with a fight or a whimper in the next year or so?

With the X-Fi 2 in the works, we will just have to wait and see.

I won't change my M-Audio Delta 192 no matter how good the new X-Fi is... They at least have superb drivers, although they aren't exactly fast at releasing new ones.

Creative saw this coming long ago as any responsible company would, as motherboard vendors began "giving away" sound cards at all price levels, and high-quality products at that. I doubt they saw this backlash from consumers coming tho....

My SB8 and SB16 are still around here somewhere Smile
