It's been known for some time that RV870 would be a shrink of RV770. The node following 65/55nm would be 45/40nm, but we weren't sure if AMD would go to 45nm or directly to half-node 40nm. It's now clear that AMD will go directly to 40nm and aim for a performance per watt ratio twice that of RV770. RV870 has been code-named "Lil Dragon", which does indicate that this will be something small, yet something to fear.

The overall performance has been suggested to be somewhere around 20% better than RV770 with a significant drop in power consumption. This points to 960 shaders (192x5), 48 texture units, 24 ROPs and so forth. If this is the case, TDP of the RV870 should be around 150W at most with today's frequencies. This is just an estimate on our part as technical specifications are still hard to come by. We also presume AMD to stay at DirectX 10.1 for now.

24 ROPs, not 40.

I've gotten a lot of questions regarding the 20% more performance, and this is just an indication of the hardware specifications, not so much the final in-game performance.

Source did say performance though, but it all seemed to point to hardware, not software.

I think 150W is actually the worst-case scenario. Judging by the moderate increase in processing units, a die-size below that of RV670 is quite probable, and with that, a power-consumption-per-clock on par with or below RV670 is likely as well. And that means, clockspeeds of 800+ @ the power consumption of a Radeon 3870 are entirely possible. So at todays clockspeeds, we might look at TDPs of as low as 110W.

What I hope is that the 24 ROP part is true. ATI hasn't increased the number of ROPs since the R420/X800 series, I think it's about time. In terms of pixel fillrate Nvidia still reigns supreme, I think it's actually one of the two reasons why GT200 still wins in most benchmarks (the other being TMUs, obviously).

I can't confirm the ROPs, but it would point to that if we're looking at the +20% scenario.

Well, 20% more SPs and TMUs + higher core- and memory clocks could have the same effect Wink

But right now it's just speculation anyway.

What I'm rather sure about though, I have a feeling we won't see another R520/R600 fiasco from AMDs graphics division anytime soon, at least not until the next completely new architecture arrives.

I sincerely hope so. Since AMD is all for the performance segment now, if that would fail, all other products using the same chip would also fail. It's a bit more dangerous now that way.
