|
|
Yesterday we served you some information on the upcoming Shanghai and Deneb processors from AMD. AMD is very confident that these will compete well with Intel's current and coming processors, but what we're wondering is how much they really know about Nehalem. We would be very surprised if they don't measure up to Core, but Nehalem may be another story. Intel is namely claiming that Nehalem will offer up to around 50% more gaming performance, and 40% better video performance; rendering, editing and conversion, when comparing Core i7-965 to Core 2 Extreme QX9770. This was from a document sent out by Intel, but it still adds to the tension we're feeling right now. |

More gaming than videoing? I would've thought they'd say the exact opposite actually. I'm also quite surprised, I think those are conservative estimates for the videoing aspect. I suppose they might have taken sampling from 8-15 different videoing usages and providing averages rather than just 1-2 we've seen the benches to.
I'm also wary of such figures. According to Intel, Penryn would perform:
1) >15% in Imaging than C2
2) >25% in 3D Rendering than C2
3) >40% in Gaming than C2
4) >40% in Video encoding than C2
C2D - Digit-Life compare 45nm vs 65nm showed:
3D Modeling and Rendering: +2.4%
CAD/CAM: 0%
Compile: +3.3%
Adobe: +9.7%
Scientific: +3.4%
Webserver: 0%
Archiving: +3.8%
Encoding: +4.2%
Games: 0%
JPEG Photoing: +3.6%
I suppose thats marketing eh |

It's a rather plain letter with rather specific tests. But hey, if I can build some more tension why not?

I thought Coolaler bought his stuff on the black market anyway?

Hehe, yeah Francois, he's the main online Intel PR machine.

I am the Happy daddy of the Intel V8.
I recently completed few SSE4 optimizations with ISVs and the result was pretty amazing. |
A performance/code analyst and a marketing man with V8 being his idea.
I also thought Coolaler got this ES stuff from "external contacts" but I'm aware he was seeded by Intel for ES leaks since Core 2 at least. Again, I am pretty certain they allowed him this leak since he only posted bits that are casual expected best showing gains and nothing that was asked or not totally good (i.e. no dual vs triple channel). That Intel dude seems as though hes just trying to give a warning out so trends of leaks don't start appearing this time IMO, which they already have done and Intel has many tight lipped about Nehalem for at least a month now. |

Nothing really surprising there. Big boost in memory performance, while system and synthetic benchmarks show good improvements. Impressive
Actual boost in games was about 5-7%. From what I've heard Deneb should be more than competitive there.
