In Sweden we will soon get to enjoy the extended HSDP Evolved net that will raise the bar far above the limits of Turbo 3G. The download speed will increase to 21Mbps from day one and will hit 42Mbps in less than two years. This isn't really much to brag about considering what LG has announced. It has demonstrated a mobile phone using the new LTE modem circuit (3GPP Long Term Evolution) which is supposed to come in full use with the 4G net in a few years.

The new modem can handle download speeds up to 60Mbps and an upload speed of 20Mbps. Though the technology itself will offer download speeds close to 100Mbps. Even if the first LTE mobile phones will appear in 2010 it will take some time before the technology will really spread. Somewhere between 2012 and 2013 analysts believe the sales of LTE phones will double, from 70 million to 150 million.

"For the past three years, LG have been pursuing 3GPP LTE standardization, working to develop and test commercially viable LTE technology with approximately 250 of R&D staffs. The result is a 13 by 13 mm modem chip, perfectly sized for the next generation of slim-yet-powerful handsets. For its demonstration today, LG used a test terminal running Windows Mobile to play back high quality, on-demand video. In addition to this handset modem, LG is also developing the first preliminary LTE-based data card, which can replace the wireless cards currently used in computers."

The 4G net is getting closer and as LG has presented one of its first 4G mobile phones the competition will certainly not be far behind with its demonstrations.
