Xbox 360 was recently updated for the third time. It has moved from the Xenon/Zephyr setup using 90nm CPU and GPU, but was later upgraded to Falcon/Opus that shrunk the CPU to 65nm, while the GPU remained at 90nm. The Jasper model has finally arrived with it Microsoft has finally completed the transition to 65nm by also shrinking the graphics circuit. There have been many signs to that the GPU has been the culprit behind the Red Ring of Death (RRoD) phenomena that has killed more than plenty of Xbox 360 consoles.

Overheated GPUs are believed to be one of the main reasons for Microsoft's high fault rate and with Jasper they hope to solve this. The GPU has been optimized, while the smaller transistors will consume less power and hopefully emit less heat which in turn should reduce the failure rate.

Over at Anandtech they have taken a closer look at Xbox 360 Jasper where they first of all show how to identify the new console in stores, and the physical differences between the chips and how they affect the power consumption of the console. Jasper consumes considerably less than Falcon, and compared to the original model the power consumption has almost been cut in half.

Unfortunately there are no temperature measurements, but it is still a good read. Especially for those who are looking for a Jasper-based Xbox 360.
