AMD will launch the AM3 platform in just a few months. AMD's first DDR3 platform will arrive in the first quarter. It is based on an updated RD790 chipset though, which means that the features are quite similar to those available found with the AM2+, especially since they use the same southbridge. The DDR3 support and new Phenom models, both quad and tri-cores, will be the main appeals at the launch. Later in Q2, AMD will unleash the real upgrade reason; RD890, paired with the new SB800 southbridge.

The RD890 will further build on the new and improved overclocking of AMD's processors and it is supposed to be an improvement over the RD790, which is still capable of bringing a Phenom II X4 945 higher then 6GHz. AMD will also bring Gigabyte Ethernet into the southbridge and support up to four graphics cards with 8x bandwidth each, or two cards with full 16x PCIe 2.0 bandwidth.

More USB and SATA ports, better and enhanced SATA support and speed, better power management, faster CPU-northbridge link, updated hardware monitor and many more things are to be expected when the RD890 chipset arrives in late Q2.

Well, granted I haven't read much of onliner opinions, from what I have read, there is still large skepticism on Deneb OC/Perf/Power for some, so I guess we will wait and see.

I have heard much about AM3 CPU being better than AM2+ counterparts in OC/Power but I've no idea why thats being said, if true and how that can occur.

Secondly, I also don't understand how and if AMD will benefit anything from DDR3. There was very little perf. change from DDR2-800 3-3-3-9 to DDR2-1200 5-4-4-5-15 for K10 65nm, almost negligible.

I'm guessing the AM3 part being estimated to have better OC/power is perhaps based on the lower TDP ratings?

On the desktop I complete agree, but is it really the same insignificant gain on the server?

Well, I'd say the casual onliner would estimate as you say but I'm just taking into account word of those who spoke to AMD on these OC events. They're the ones saying AM3 is better and the thing to wait for. Personally I've not heard nothing from any internal authoritative source so not sure at all. Would've expected you to know Smile

I also don't know how TDP of parts dropped 30 odd percent so quick only a month after..

The gain is quite large on the Server front, yep. Servers are very casually Memory/Disk/Interconnect bottlenecked. Smile

Actually, have heard very little about AM3. Surprisingly little to be frank.

I'm digging though Wink
