About a year ago the first stories about how ol' school motherboard manufacturer Universal abit was about to leave the market surfaced, but all stories since then have been nothing more than rumors. Last we heard Universal abit would shut down on December 31st and even if all stories remained unconfirmed, abit has officially confirmed that things are coming to an end.

Mother company USI does not want to comment on the faith of abit, but abit's head of marketing Thore Welling shared a few words with Hexus.

"After 20 years in the market the abit brand now bids farewell, so it's also time for me now to lock the doors of the marketing department. That's it for good now."

After speaking to the Dutch office, Hexus confirmed that abit hasn't sold a single product in 2009 but only kept the office open for warranty inquiries. Marketing has seized entirely and, alas, abit is about to slowly fade out of existence. We hope to get an official statement from USI in the near future, it's the least we could ask for.

Amusingly, it should be said that abit has remained a popular choice among high-end users and enthusiast, clearly reflected by the hardware configurations used in Swedish Computer Performance Championship. Especially in the Percental Overclocking category where many older processors are used and abit's motherboards are the best to be found.

We can only hope that abit will return in some form, but the brand will certainly live on in the hearts of many, many enthusiasts.
