Mozilla has revealed some of its plans for the future of Firefox. The developers have started a project to support multi-core processors and improve the stability of the browser. Firefox will become multi-threaded where one process will handle the actual program, while several subprocesses will handle the material shown by each tab. With multiple threads for different parts of the browser it can use multi-core processors in a better way, but also make Firefox more stable.

Would a website crash the browser only the process that is dedicated to the tab will be affected, the remaining pages and the actual browser can continue like nothing happened.

Firefox 3.0.10

Similar multi-thread support is available with browsers Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8. Mozilla is planning to match and improve the functionality Google and Microsoft offers, but the final development phase is not expected to finish the mid of next year.
