Back in February we got the first more detailed information on Intel's coming server processor Nehalem-EX. The processor will be Intel's first octo-core processor and used in systems with more than two processors for wide loads. Intel's current flagship is the hexa-core Dunnington processor based on the Intel's Penryn architecture. Nehalem-EX is based on Intel's latest Nehalem architecture also used in the Core i7 family of processors, but also Intel's Xeon family for servers with dual processors.

Nehalem-EX will be Intel's first Nehalem-based processor for systems with more than two processors and eight cores each with Nehalem-EX will improve performance substantially for Intel servers.

As revealed in the past, the processor will be consist of 2.3 billion transistors and be made with 45nm technology. With HyperThreading support a sole Nehalem-EX processor can handle up to 16 threads simultaneously.

Intel is expected to officially announce and detail the Nehalem-EX processor next week, but it will most likely not become available before near the end of the year or the start of the next.
