Intel will launch the new mid-range platform in September and its P55 chipset will work alongside Intel's Lynnfield processor, expected to be named Core i5. When in September has been uncertain, but new sources suggests that Intel is set for September 1st as the date Lynnfield will reach stores. At the same time new information suggests how Intel will squeeze in the new platform into a tight market.

As seen in the performance preview of Intel's Lynnfield CPU there are small differences compared to Intel's entry model of the Core i7 family. Core i7 920 operates at 2.66GHz, the same frequency as the entry model of the Core i5 family is expected to operate at.

The performance of Intel's two processor families are different somewhat, but at the same time they have a bit too many similarities and Intel has decided to retire a number of its Core i7 models when the new Lynnfield processor arrives.

Among others it looks like Core i7 920 and 940 will disappear and Intel will instead enforce the Core i7 profiling toward high-end and workstations.
