|

Our very own overclocking guru Robert "Crotale" Kilhberg has as usual spent a lot of his time at DreamHack in NordicHardware's booth doing some extreme overclocking attempts. Last summer it was a Celeron 2.53 which was overclocked to 5.2GHz with dry ice. This year the goal was 6GHz with a Pentium 4 660 (3.6 GHz) and to reach this magical number we used a cascade compressor system, which you could take a peak at in our booth, when and where it lowered the temperature to about -100 degrees Celsius on the processor. Unfortunately not everything went as planned at DreamHack Winter 2005 and the motherboard Crotale had prepared for the overclocking tests gave up way too early.
Thanks to some quick assistance by ABIT, which lent us the board they had in their demo computer (ABIT AW8-Max) Robert could start again and after many attempts he finally managed to go past 6GHz. The final result was 6009MHz and after all the commotion it is a pretty nice result. If there was anyone who was even happier than Robert it might have been Peter Billing who had the best guess and could go home with a water cooling kit by Corsair.
Below you can see some nice pictures from the overclocking attempts.

The AW8 board Abit supplied was great up to 329MHz FSB, but it refused to go any higher. We thought about modding it, but since Abit uses it uGuru dealie we didn't know if we could trust the available mods for the ASUS board, I.e. if we could just assume the layout/solution was similar with the Abit board, but luckily it worked out just fine anyway

I want to see more pics of the cascade
Maybe even a brief article with some designs or schematics _________________ E6600 @ 3800Mhz | EVGA 680i | 2GB DDR2 PC8500 @ 550Mhz | 7800GT |Silverstone Zeus 750W| DD TDX 120mm waterloop |

That thing is huge... was that made (adapted) from standard AC units? _________________ E6600 @ 3800Mhz | EVGA 680i | 2GB DDR2 PC8500 @ 550Mhz | 7800GT |Silverstone Zeus 750W| DD TDX 120mm waterloop |

The compressors are pretty much the same you find in a Vapochill system.
Fun fact, the system is built with exact capillary tubes instead of a pressure vent

How do you get it over 280MHz FSB? The Abit board lacks PCI-e frequency lock feature (which IMO is an important feature that is lacking from a high end board such as this) which all other non-intel 955 boards (e.g. MSI / Gigabyte / Asus) have, and that makes it impossible to get its FSB over 280MHz!!
At 280MHz, its PCI-e freq is already at 105MHz, which is the max most nVidia graphics card will tolerate (or at least with the 7800GT and 6600GT I've tried).
I'm a bit skeptical about the results -- unless ABIT have modded the bios to lock the PCI-e freq. Otherwise, the ABIT AW8 955 motherboard is a complete crap. Most disappointing 955 board. |

We didn't have any trouble with PCI-e frequencies, but we also didn't investigate it further.
The board was really solid up to well beyond 320FSB using both a 6600GT and a 7800GTX, but as Delph1 wrote, it got a little tricky at 330FSB. _________________ Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 @ 5300MHz, EVGA NF680i, Corsair Dominator 8888
