Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 is the newest and most extreme addition to Intel's lineup of mobile processors. While we are quite accustomed to Intel launching Extreme and unlocked processors running at very high frequencies for the desktop market, it's not quite the same with the mobile market. This market has some very different requirements, less power and less heat mainly. During the last few years or so, more and more people have shown interest in the so called DTR category of laptops. DTR is short for DeskTop Replacement and is not really portable computer, but not quite a desktop. This is were Intel has sighted a need and filled the void with its new processor.
Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 is namely based on the Merom core and unlocked just like its desktop siblings. The X7800 model runs at 2.6 GHz and has a TDP at 44W, instead of 35W like the other 800MHz FSB processors. Later this year Intel will launch the X7900 and it will most likely replace the X7800 as we can't imagine the demand for mobile Core 2 Extreme is very high (thus keeping two Extreme models alive at the same time would be rather unnecessary).
Over at matbe they've tested ASUS G2S, which has an Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 under the hood. Paired with NVIDIA's mobile 8600 chip it is certainly a monster of a laptop. The laptop is even capable of handling the processor when it is overclocked (although just barely higher than stock). We would be quite interested in seeing what one of these could do under some real cooling, but until then you can check out the benchmarks over at matbe.com (translated).
