According to a study made by Jon Peddie Research, NVIDIA gained even more market shares in Q4, 2007. NVIDIA gained 7 percentages, from 64 to 71, leaving AMD with less than a third of the discrete graphics card market. The study doesn't elaborate on why that is, but we can only guess that it's because of the lack of a true high-end product. The PR that comes from having the fastest card on the market should not be underestimated as it rubs off on the slower cards.

Radeon HD 2900XT isn't even close to GeForce 8800GTX and Ultra in games, especially with AA activated, and the Radeon HD 3800 cards are no different. If NVIDIA hadn't suffered from a supply drought with the GeForce 8800GT, the growth might have been even bigger.

Overall, this market has grown quite a lot over the last year. Year-to-year the market value increased by 46.3%, and the unit shipments by 50.3% in Q4, but then Q4 in 2006 was fairly weak. Year-to-year in Q3, the market value increased by "only" 33% and unit shipments by 18.7%.
