The guys who brought us the first GeForce 9800GX2 has followed up with a review of the GeForce 9800GTX. And guess what? It's slightly faster than a slightly lower clocked GeForce 8800GTS. Unfortunately, the review only holds NVIDIA cards; GeForce 9800GTX vs. 8800 Ultra, 8800GTX and 8800GTS. Without any Radeon card, it gets kind of flat, but still shows with the utmost clarity that, at stock frequencies, GeForce 9800GTX is not a necessary upgrade for anyone who already owns a GeForce 8 series card.

Beware that the list of specifications is not entirely on the mark. GeForce 9800GTX does not have OpenGl 3.0 support or Quad-SLI, "just" OpenGl 2.1 and 3-way SLI.

A comparison with the GeForce 9800GX2 and two cards in SLI would've been nice too, but considering how early this review (the card is not due until the 25th), we can't really complain. Especially as two GeForce 9800GTX cards ($299-349)will cost just slightly more than a single GeForce 9800GX2 ($599).

We would've liked some results with the card at overclocked frequencies too, because this is where the GeForce 9800 series is going to shine with the new PCB and power circuitry.

The pricing is quite right, the VRM is much beefier than on the GTS and the performance is presumably worse than the 3870 X2... I'm not entirely sure about this. Maybe if it overclocks like a god, but I'm not entirely sure about that either. I quite loved the 8800 Ultra, its price aside. _________________ Man, or woman, or both?

It is a good looking card if nothing else
I was very happy with my old Gtx overclocks after I had volt modded it. Who knows. I want to toy with these 2900's a little while longer |

Since you enjoy playing 3DMark, it might be worthwhile hanging on to them just a little while longer

I wonder, will current G80 coolers fit on all these new G92 cards? (8800 GTS, GT, 9800 series). _________________ E6600 @ 3800Mhz | EVGA 680i | 2GB DDR2 PC8500 @ 550Mhz | 7800GT |Silverstone Zeus 750W| DD TDX 120mm waterloop |

No, the G92 cards have... Oh, wait, it looks just like around the G80 core. Won't say anything. I think they have two sets of fittings, one which is the standard good old R580/RV670 one and one G80 like. Not sure though. _________________ Man, or woman, or both?

It would only make sense for NV to not piss off all the 3rdpty cooler guys... Not to mention all the OEM's that use "custom" coolers. 8800 series isn't that old... _________________ E6600 @ 3800Mhz | EVGA 680i | 2GB DDR2 PC8500 @ 550Mhz | 7800GT |Silverstone Zeus 750W| DD TDX 120mm waterloop |

Holes are the same, but since the memory layout is different, all full-size blocks are still worthless.
