Ballmer slips Blu-ray player for Xbox 360
Written by Andreas G 23 October 2009 22:13

Microsoft held out for long but apparently it can't hold it in any longer. We're of course talking about the company's view on Blu-ray and especially together with its Xbox 360 video game console. Blu-ray is a key component of Sony's PlayStation 3 console and Sony is the leader of the optical format. After the defeat of HD DVD Microsoft has relied on downloadable media but it has finally given up and Steve Ballmer has more or less confirmed a stand-alone Blu-ray player is coming.

The comment slipped out of Ballmer during an interview with Gizmodo and matches the mood of the market where Blu-ray is the only physical storage format that hasn't dropped in sales lately.

Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.

Even if this isn't confirmation to whether an external Blu-ray player is coming for Xbox 360 anytime soon, but it's good to know where we're heading, especially as the PR department couldn't or wouldn't deny or confirm the story.
