NVIDIA, a software company?
Written by Andreas G 25 October 2009 15:09

The only software developed by NVIDIA is drivers and tools for supporting its hardware platforms with software. Despite that NVIDIA VP Jen Hsun Huang stated that NVIDIA should be considered a software company. In the same breath Huang points out that it will not develop any actual software, but that the software is powering the growth of the company.

This sounds like the situation for most hardware developers, but Huang says that its focus on graphics and parallel data power makes NVIDIA even more dependent on software.

In the interview by Chw.net Huang goes further and compares NVIDIA to Apple, which is another company, according to him, that sells hardware but with a large focus on the software.

On the question if games is the market bringing in the most profit to NVIDIA we get an interesting answer that reflects up on the coming launch of the Fermi architecture.

I would say probably not, 2/3 of our revenue come from games but 2/3 of our profit comes from Quadro workstations, you know NVIDIA is the words largest workstation technology provider, our market share is about 95% in this market, every single company, every single country, every single car, oil, plane, train, shoes, etc… uses Quadro technology, this is the highest market share of any workstation company in the history of making but the workstation is not very large but is very important.

Jen Hsun Huang also talks about NVIDIA's Tegra venture and at the same time ensures us that gamers will not be disappointed by the coming Fermi architecture.
