MSI shows how to unlock Phenom cores
Written by Andreas G 30 October 2009 15:43

Motherboard maker MSI has posted a new microsite that has caught our interest. It discusses the unlocking of processor cores and in a detailed way that should please enthusiasts, AMD not as much. MSI has listed all of the new AMD 785G motherboards that can be used to unlock the fourth core of AMD Phenom II X3. Except from listing its five motherboards it also has a pretty detailed guide covering the BIOS settings on how to unlock the fourth cores, even those AMD inactivated from factory.

As you perhaps know AMD doesn't make processors with just three cores. Its Phenom II X3 processors are simply quad-core CPUs where one core has been inactivated, which is often reversible.

The new MSI 785G motherboards have now even more value with just a simple free upgrade of the CPU. The related MSI 785G models which are capable for unlocking the fourth core of a Phenom X3 CPU II are listed below. The unlock is possible, because we are dealing with the quad-core chips to processors.

A quite interesting initiative by MSI that should bring new interest to AMD's 785G chipset and Phenom II X3 among enthusiasts and overclockers, especially those who are looking to build powerful yet affordable machines.

We have known for some time that AMD's processors can be unlocked with motherboards from other companies but it was a bit unexpected to see such a large company like MSI to officially support unlocking, which it's not exactly endorsed by AMD.

More on MSI's motherboards and how to unlock Phenom II X3 processors at MSI Unlockcore.
