Quad SLI problems with GeForce 7950GX2 just political
Written by Andreas G 23 May 2006 16:11

GeForce 7950GX2 was suppose to be launched on May 30, but has been delayed to June 6 and according to information we've received earlier on this is just one out of several delays of NVIDIAs dual-GPU graphics card. The reason for postponing the launch is not related to any hardware or driver issues, which we earlier received indications for. The delays are more because of political problems than anything else, GeForce 7900GX2 was launched for the OEM market at first and it seems the big PC builders are simply not ready to let go off the sole rights to sell Quad SLI systems.

They realize that when the retail version of NVIDIA's dual-GPU graphics card appears the interest for the complete packages supplied by them will drop. By putting NVIDIA under pressure it seems they've been able to postpone the retail launch of GeForce 7950GX2, something that is hard to get confirmation for from the involved parties.

Even if GeForce 7950GX2 is finally getting closer its launch date, whatever it may finally be, this does not mean the political problems are over for NVIDIA's beast. The reason NVIDIA has deactivated Quad SLI with its drivers is namely not because of the technology itself. Once again it is pressure from other parties that do not want to see Quad SLI support for the retail market and therefore GeForce 7950GX2 will only be the fastest graphics card on the market to begin with, not the fastest system. We've already noticed modified drivers that activates the support for Quad SLI even with GeForce 7950GX2 and we will be able to tell you how well these works quite soon.
