Mod chip for Xbox 360 getting closer, but epoxy glue is in the way
Written by Andreas G 24 May 2006 14:25

We have been following the reports about the modification attempts made with Microsoft's Xbox 360 console and despite that hackers have managed to get past Microsoft's protection and boot a backup disc of an original game, the solution has been far from simple. Modifying Microsoft's first video game cosnole, Xbox, became a major industry and now it seems that they are getting closer to the first mod chip for Xbox 360 as well. It's Team Xecuter that has started working on a mod chip that will let two firmware versions work inside the console, one activated at regular use while the hacked firmware will be activated when the console will be used for less legal matters. Even if Team Xecuter claims to be close to a solution and a fullly featured mod chip they've bumped into an unexpected obstacle.

Namely epoxy glue, which Microsoft has used to cover the original firmware. This means that it's anything but easy to access the pins for the circuit. Now it seems that a user at Xbox-Scene.com has found alternative soldering spots for the modification and the question is if Microsoft's "unhackbable" video game console will soon be mastered, also commercially. We at least know that the last thing Microsoft wants is a similar development as with the first Xbox console, the question is what it will do about it in the end.
