China wants bloggers to register real names
Written by Andreas G 25 October 2006 11:48

As we've seen in earlier reports freedom of speech and government of China doesn't quite mix and the Internet has turned up to be a real pain for it. We know since earlier that it censors large portions of the information on the Internet and now it is hunting for those who are spreading information nationally as well. China's Internet organ has namely recommended the government to require bloggers to use their own names when registering at blog sites, and similar. This is so that it will be easier to catch those who are spreading "harmful" information. You will still be able to post under a pseudonym but the blog will be registered to the editor's real name.

"The society, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Information Industry, said no decision had been made but that a 'real name system' was inevitable."

So far this is just a proposal but considering the government's strict control of the Internet and its information we can't say we would be surprised if it went through.
