ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the organ that makes the decision about new domains. This week it held a big meeting where it has, among others, discussed the top domain .xxx. This domain was first suggested many years ago, but has never been able to make it all the way. The domain would be used to gather all of the pornographic material under one domain. The domain has now once again been dismissed by ICANN and this is because the organ feels that by approving this domain it would be controlling and perhaps even be censuring the content of the Internet, which is not what it is for. The discussions have already become heated and the organizations supporting the domain will keep pushing for its approval.
