Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 reviewed

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 is one of the 45 nm dual-core models Intel will launch at the beginning of next year. It sports a 1333 MHz FSB, 6MB L2 cache, 47 new SSE4 instructions, and various technological improvements over the current 65 nm Conroe-based processors. The Core 2 Duo E8400 runs at 3.0 GHz, but there will be models running at both higher and lower frequencies at the launch. This specific model is estimated to cost around $180, which also makes it fairly affordable. Over at Expreview they've posted a preview of the Core 2 Duo E8400, where they run benchmarks, measure temperatures and power consumption, and overclock it to 4 Ghz on air without much hassle.

Just as Yorkfield runs cooler and consumes less power than Kentsfield, Wolfdale performs the same way when compared to Conroe. And if 4 GHz with air cooling is going to this easy with the retail CPUs, Intel has a real winner on its hands here.

The overall performance of the chip is very much resembling that of the Yorkfield-based processors. Slightly better than the predecessor, but not breathtaking. The largest improvements are with the lower temperatures and power consumption, and of the course the improved overclocking potential.
