Crucial demonstrates the strength of Solid State Drives
Written by Andreas G 14 January 2008 21:41

Lexar Crucial is displaying its products CES in Las Vegas and since it is a memory manufacturer it comes as no surprise that it has presented a couple of Solid State Drives. The biggest advantages of SSD is usually summarized as better access time and lower power consumption, and lately the overall performance has been improving, but something you don't hear much about is the durability. Unlike a mechanical drive where vibrations and impacts can cause permanent damaged to vital parts of the harddrive, SSD has no moving parts. This makes the drives incredibly resistant to vibrations, which Lexar Crucial demonstrated by dropping one of its coming SSD drives into a paint mixer.

Even if they didn't do the same to a mechanical drive, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that it would not do well. The SSD passed the test with honor. At Reg Hardware they've published a video from the event showing Crucial's somewhat unusual demonstration.
