Intel launches five Atom processors
Written by Andreas G 02 April 2008 15:07

Intel has finally unveiled the first models of the Atom series. The Atom series is specifically designed for so called Mobile Internet Devices (MID) and embedded systems. MID includes the new ultramobile budget laptop segment, also known as "netbooks". Several manufacturers have already announced plans for netbooks based on the Centrino Atom platform. Processors of the Centrino Atom platform sports TDP of 0.65-2.4W, and will consume as little as 80-100mW during idle.

This is possible thanks to Intel Deep Power Down Technology, CMOS mode and shared I/O power. Not to forget, Intel's 45 nanometer high-k metal gate manufacturing process. Atom processors will be available at speeds up to 1.86GHz. The package as a whole consists of an Atom CPU, but also a single-chip housing I/O connectivity, graphics, networking and more; called Intel System Controller Hub.

"Today is a historic day for Intel and the high-tech industry as we deliver our first-ever Intel Atom processor and surround it with a great package of technology," said Anand Chandrasekher, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Ultra Mobility Group. "Mix in the incredible innovation coming from our fellow device makers and software vendors, and we will change the way consumers will come to know and access the World Wide Web. These forthcoming MIDs, and some incredible longer-term plans our customers are sharing with us, will show how small devices can deliver a big Internet experience."
