NVIDIA launches nForce 780a SLI
Written by Andreas G 06 May 2008 18:44

NVIDIA has finally announced the nForce 780a SLI chipset with Hybrid SLI technology. nForce 780a SLI is for the socket AM2+ platform and has an integrated graphics processor, which is kind of the key component here. Those who don't need a powerful graphics card will do just fine with the integrated graphics, but those who need more can install a discrete graphics card, GeForce 9800GTX or 9800GX2, and get an extra punch.

The special with Hybrid SLI is that the discrete graphics card will remain dormant until you need it. When browsing the web or just reading e-mail, the computer will use the integrated graphics, but when you start a game, the discrete card will take over and give you all the power you need.

"Hybrid SLI will give consumers the extra GPU performance they need for the increasing numbers of visual PC applications such as today’s PC games," said Drew Henry, general manager of platform business at NVIDIA. "And it will give gamers and PC enthusiasts the quiet and power savings they demand. Hybrid SLI components could very well pay for themselves over the life of the PC."

If you want to take advantage of the Hybrid Boost feature you need go for either GeForce 8400 GS or GeForce 8500 GT, but it might just be for the better and wait for newer Hybrid Power-compatible graphics card with better performance, if you think the 9800 series cards are too expensive.
