VIA comes through on open source initiative
Written by Andreas G 14 May 2008 11:00

Last month, VIA announced it's new-found love for the open source community and said that it would follow in AMD's footsteps by releasing more and more code to the open source community. It did launch a website and it did release a few binaries, but overall nothing happened, until now. Phoronix has been covering VIA's progress, and just a few days ago, they openly questioned whether VIA's efforts was genuine, which was well grounded since the community website was pretty bare.

VIA has now released over 16,000 lines of code under GNU GPLv2, with support for  Unichrome CLE266, K400, K800, PM800, CN700, CX700, K8M890, P4M890, P4M900, and VX800 IGPs. And judging from a quick look at the code, Phoronix concludes that it does look mature, with support for digital outputs, including HDMI. The work of an open source coder is never done though, but VIA has clearly shown that it is serious with its commitment.
