Wine reaches code-freeze, first release candidate is out
Written by Andreas G 14 May 2008 11:23

WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator) has been around for some time now and its one of the most essential applications for anyone using Linux, BSD, Solaris, or Mac OS X. Wine makes it possible to run Windows applications in any of these environments, and several popular products have spawned from the Wine project, such as Cedega and CrossOver. Wine acts as a compatibility layer between the Windows application and the non-Windows operating system, it's a Windows API for other operating systems.

The first beta (v0.9) was released in October 2005 after being in development since 1993. If the plan holds, version 1.0 will hit the streets next month. Wine has reached the code-freeze stage and the first release candidate is out. From now it's only bug fixing until the final release. You can download Release Candidate 1 from the official Wine website;
