Western Digital launches Caviar Black performance series, 1TB
Written by Andreas G 11 June 2008 19:42

Western Digital launched 3.5" harddrives for the retail channel sporting 1TB storage capacity a long time ago. These were of the Caviar GP (GreenPower) series, which focuses on power efficiency, but that wasn't all WD was planning for the massive storage segment. WD has decided to show the competition what it's really made of by launching the Caviar Black series which contains two new models, at 750GB and 1TB respectively. According to WD's own tests, Caviar Black is the fastest 3.5" 7200 RPM harddrive on the market, but it didn't specify the testing conditions. The two things that are suppose to make Caviar Black stand out are that the drives comes with two on-board processors and a massive 32MB cache.

The drives will become available in a week or so and the prices will be $249 for the 1TB model and $199 for the 750GB model. The drives are covered by a five year warranty. WD has also shared its thought with the new product name;

WD Caviar Blue, Green, Black
WD's new 'blue, green, black' product system enables customers to choose the right drive for them. WD Caviar Blue represents the performance and reliability that WD has been building for over 20 years, the WD Caviar Green employs WD's GreenPower technology for cool, quiet and eco-friendly operation, while the WD Caviar Black family of hard drives delivers maximum performance for today's discriminating technology enthusiasts.
