OCZ seems to be going all in for the Solid State Drive market and after launching its Flash Media series at capacities of 32GB/64GB, it's time for a new 2.5" SSD series to see the brink of day. OCZ Core Series is the name of the new family, and just like previous families it's a SATAII device which uses NAND flash memory chips for storing data. According to OCZ, the Core Series will be the most affordable option on the SSD market today. It even claims that the Core series halves the cost per gigabyte, when compared to other high-end models on the market.
There's no doubt OCZ has tried to optimize the performance of its new drives. The read speed has been specified to 143MB/s while the write speed will reach 93MB/s at best. The access time is as always negligible, 0.35ms.
The Core series contains three models with varying storage density, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. The warranty is 2 years, which is better than some other manufacturers, but still a bit weak in our opinion when SSDs are suppose to be extremely durable. The prices are also quite attractive, relatively speaking of course. Hardly cheap when compared to mechanical drives, but a big step forward for SSDs. The MSRPs are set to $169, $259 and $479 for 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.
