Hitachi is one of the most active harddrive developers we have today and its usually one of the first to break new ground in storage capacity. The Japanese company has now revealed some of its future plans, and they include multiplying the capacity of mechanical harddrives by 2010. Through a new storage technology called perpendicular-to-the-plane giant magnetoresistance (CPP-GMR), Hitachi will develop harddrives capable of storing up to 5TB. Current top of the line harddrives can store up to 1TB, which means Hitachi aims to multiply the storage capacity of mechanical harddrives five times in just 1.5 years. The CPP-GMR technology will result in data densities of more than 1TB per square inch, a magical border for harddrive manufacturers to cross.
