Seagate announces first 1.5TB harddrive and 500GB 2.5" drive
Written by Andreas G 13 July 2008 18:55

Following Hitachi's announcement of a new and better 1TB harddrive using next generation perpendicular magnetic recording technology, Seagate has announced the world's first 1.5TB hardrive, and 2.5" 500GB harddrive. Hitachi's new harddrives used 375GB platters and we're almost certain that Seagate's new platters have a similar density. Even if the press release doesn't reveal the exact density, it does say that Seagate achieved 1.5TB with only four platters (1500/4=375).

"Organizations and consumers of all kinds worldwide continue to create, share and consume digital content at levels never before seen, giving rise to new markets, new applications and demand for desktop and notebook computers with unprecedented storage capacity, performance and reliability," said Michael Wingert, Seagate executive vice president and general manager, Personal Compute Business. "Seagate is committed to powering the next generation of computing today with the planet’s fastest, highest-capacity and most reliable storage solutions."

Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB is a part of the eleventh generation of harddrives from Seagate. Seagate says that it's not only big, but also fast. The drive delivers a sustained data rate of up to 120MB/second according to Seagate's own tests. The new technology will also be implemented with models sporting 1TB, 750GB, 640GB, 500GB, 320GB and 160GB, with 16MB or 32MB cache.

Beside the new generation of desktop harddrives, Seagate has announced two new series of laptop drives, Momentus 5400.6 and Momentus 7200.4. The difference between them are mainly the rotational speed, 5400RPM vs. 7200RPM. Both drives are available from 120GB up to 500GB. They also offer additional shock protection technologies that may come in handy if installed in a laptop.

The Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB will start shipping in August, while the laptop drives will start shipping in Q4.
