Qosmio G55 - world's first Cell-equipped laptop
Written by Andreas G 16 July 2008 21:29

Toshiba has announced the world's first laptop with a Cell processor under the hood. Yes, the same processor found inside Sony's PlayStation 3 video game console. Although it's not an exact copy of the PS3 CPU, and the Cell processor inside Toshiba Qosmio G55 is not meant for regular CPU work or gaming. Toshiba was one of the three companies developing the Cell Broadband Engine, together with IBM and Sony, and this particular processor has been dubbed Toshiba Quad-Core HD. As the name implies this Cell processor comes with four SPE (Synergistic Processing Elements), unlike PS3 which has seven.

The Toshiba Quad-Core HD processor is dedicated to assisting the system processor, Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 (2.0GHz), with particularly intensive tasks, especially multimedia. The Cell processor kicks in during playback of high definition video and enables realtime encoding.

We're curious to see how much Toshiba's Quad-Core HD processor really has to add to a laptop, especially since it's a concept it will keep developing. Both Sony and IBM are diligent laptop manufacturers, so this may very well just be the beginning.

  • Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P7350
Tohiba Quad Core HD Processor with 4 SPE
  • 4GB PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHz SDRAM
  • 500GB: 250GB 5400rpm + 250GB 5400rpm
  • 18.4" diagonal widescreen TruBrite® TFT active-matrix LCD display at 1680x945 native resolution (HD+)
  • DVD-SuperMulti (+/-R double layer) with Labelflash™ drive
  • Atheros® Wireless LAN (802.11b/g/n)
  • NVIDIAGeForce 9600M GT, 512MB GDDR2 discrete graphics memory, plus up to 1791MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory using NVIDIA TurboCache™ technology.
  • Bluetooth® V2.1 + EDR
  • Dimensions (WxDxH Front/H Rear): 17.8” x 12.2” x 1.5” /1.9” with feet
  • Weight: Starting at 10.8 lbs, depending upon configuration

The MSRP is $1,599 with the standard options. Detailed specifications can be found over at Toshiba's website.
