Ruiz steps down, Meyer to steer AMD from now
Written by Andreas G 23 July 2008 23:00

The most flamed man of the industry has stepped down from his throne and passed on the crown to his successor. Hector Ruiz is a man who has been blamed for much of AMD's current shape, and anonymous polls even have shown that the support within the company was seriously declining. Ruiz was hired by AMD founder Jerry Sanders in 2000 after having worked his way up to President of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector. Ruiz later succeeded Sanders as CEO in 2002, and became chairman of the board in 2004.

After seven consecutive red quarters he has now stepped down in favor of by Dirk Meyer, previously President and Chief Operating Officer of AMD’s Microprocessor Solutions Sector. Meyer's greatest accomplishment as an engineer at AMD is most likely the original Athlon processor. He lead the team that designed and developed the K7 series.

Ruiz will remain at AMD as executive chairman of AMD and chair of the board of directors to complete some of the projects he has already initiated and assist Meyer during a transition period. This may very well be the best of times for a change at AMD. The graphics department is shaping up and the new 45nm processors are suppose to be ready in a not all too distant future.
