Creative has been harshly criticized for its Windows Vista drivers and its X-Fi sound card series. In most cases he critique has been well founded as the driver updates have been rather few and the overall support anything but lustrous. Multiple functions available with Windows XP has been absent and when nifty hackers solved these issues, they were confronted by Creative. Now that Daniel_k is no longer active, X-Fi users has to put their faith in Creative actually fixing the drivers.
One step has now been taken as the latest Windows Vista X-Fi driver enables both Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. And it has added DVD Audio playback to the list of features, which was previously only available with Windows XP, but not Windows Vista. Sadly, it's not a perfect update as DVD Audio only works with Windows Vista 32-bit, but like we said, a step in the right direction.
We can only hope that this is the beginning of a bigger and better effort from Creative and its driver team. ATI was able to make big turn-around with the launch of the Catalyst program a few years back, and with fresh competition from ASUS, Creative should really make sure to keep its users happy.
