Mobile Nehalem platform dubbed Calpella
Written by Andreas G 10 August 2008 20:06

Intel's coming Nehalem architecture will make an appearance in each of the three segments, server, desktop and mobile, and it seems that the name of the mobile platform has leaked, Calpella. It also confirms that the platform will arrive in Q3 2009. The Nehalem-based processors that will launch with the platform are called Clarksfield and Auburndale. Both sport an integrated DDR3 memory controller and the latter of the two also comes with an integrated graphics core.

Instead of the regular chipset design with one northbridge and southbridge, Calpella will use a single chip called Ibex Peak-M, which will handle and coordinate functions of the motherboard. Many of the regular northbridge features, including the memory controller is now on-die, which means that the number of needed external chips have been reduced and left us with a much simplified motherboard design.
