ASUS Bamboo Series - the greener notebook

ASUS released some bits and pieces about a new series of notebooks called Eco Book at the start of 2007. As the name implied, the focus was on creating a greener alternative for the portable market by offering lower power consumption but also making large parts of the casing from bamboo. Now that ASUS has finally launched the new notebook series it has chosen to go with another name, ASUS Bamboo Series.

The concept is the very same and it doesn't take a wizard to locate the ASUS Bambooputer in a crowd of laptops. The bamboo panels are made from Moso bamboo (also used by the textile industry), which also makes every Bamboo model unique thanks to the organic nature of the material with its different fiber patterns and color tones. ASUS hopes that the bamboo panels will not just be a way of caring for Mother Nature but also make the usage feel more natural, literally. Each notebook also has a touchpad with patterns from bamboo fiber.

ASUS has geared the first models toward the ultramobile segment and has launched two different models, one sporting a 12.1" display weighing 1.57kg and one measuring 11.1", weighing in at 1.25kg.

The green spirit shines even stronger through the new Super Hybrid Engine that should result in an optimal mix of performance and power saving.

"In terms of power efficiency improvement, Super Hybrid Engine can extend battery life between 35% and 70% as compared to notebooks with the same specifications but without the technology, and yet enable users to boost their systems' performance by up to 23%. It achieves this by intelligently monitoring the power requirements of the notebook's components and automatically adjusting the power levels in real-time to match the current consumption needs, thus optimizing both system performance and power efficiency."

We're still waiting for the first hands-on reviews of ASUS' new grass computers, which appeal to users looking for a sober and "green" design.
