Samsung snaps up SanDisk?
Written by Andreas G 08 September 2008 19:54

We earlier reported about how rumors were hinting that Seagate was in the market for a NAND flash manufacturer and that one of the possible acquisitions would be SanDisk. A deal between Seagate and SanDisk would certainly give Seagate a great foundation for when it starts up its own Solid State Drives section. Little has been heard since then, until recently when stories started going around that Samsung might be interested in acquiring SanDisk.

Samsung is the leading flash memory manufacturer and intends to strengthen its position further, which is why it is contemplating SanDisk. SanDisk has had a rough period lately and Samsung is probably quite eager to get rid of those annual $4-500 million patent license fees. If both Seagate and Samsung are genuinely interested in acquiring SanDisk neither the price nor the interest for the established NAND flash market will drop anytime soon.
