SideWinder X8 sports BlueTrack and 4000dpi
Written by Andreas G 11 September 2008 20:38

Yesterday we told you about Microsoft's new tracking technology called BlueTrack. This new optical technology sports a bigger beam and better reflection that should enable a mouse to work better on surfaces like marble and plywood. The first two models wasn't exactly the kind of flagship products you would expect to showcase cutting edge technology capable of fast and precise movement with its 1000 dpi resolution. Thus, Microsoft has also announced the first gaming mouse using BlueTrack and has really gone all the way.

SideWinder X8 - SideWinder X5 - SideWinder

Microsoft SideWinder X8 is the name of the mouse which is obviously based on the previous SideWinder model. Unlike the X5 model, X8 comes fully loaded and beside the new tracking technology Microsoft has come up with some news. The base design is the same as SideWinder with integrated LCD, extra weights, and multiple dpi settings, but the X8 model has some new thumb buttons that looks to be placed better.

But the big news is still the BlueTrack sensor with 4000 dpi resolution, twice as high as the older SideWinder, and the fact that the mouse is now cordless. When cord-free the mouse is powered by a single AAA battery and will manage up to 30 hours of use. You then charge the mouse by connecting the cord to the front of the mouse. The cord otherwise hides inside a cylinder that also houses the extra weights and replaceable feet.

Microsoft SideWinder X8 looks like a really interesting option for the hardcore gamers and this is certainly proof for that BlueTrack is not just for working on odd surfaces but also precision. Alas, we will have to wait until February 2009 when the mouse will reach stores and cost $99.95.

A short preview of SideWinder X8 has been posted at MaximumPC.com.
