MSI spikes Radeon HD 4830 with more power phases
Written by Andreas G 28 October 2008 13:35

AMD's recently announced Radeon HD 4830 graphics card is available from many different manufacturers and costs less than $150 in most stores, but just because it is a lower mid-range card doesn't mean companies will ignore it for further enhancements. MSI has blessed 4830 with some additional parameters to make it even better with non-reference power with 4+1 phases, double up from the 2+1 reference, and solid state chokes to make it a better overclocker and overall more stable. It's not just the PCB that is non-reference but also the cooler and it is always admiring to see some innovative thinking in this market segment.

Press release below;

MSI adds 4+1 Phase power and SSC to its own design R4830 series graphic cards

Today, MSI unveils its R4830 series graphic cards, the latest addition to its high-performance of R4800 series graphic cards. MSI R4830 series graphics card is based on ATI’s Radeon™ HD 4830 GP and are equipped with 512MB memory or 1GB memory. With 640 stream processors, 256-bit memory bus and support of DirectX® 10.1 MSI R4830 graphic cards offer definitively value for money. To create even more added value for its users MSI offers a own PCB design with 4+1 power phases, Solid State Chokes and Seaweed Blade fan. On top of that, the MSI 4830 cards are factory-overclocked for maximum performance.

MSI 4+1 Power Phase
Unlike the reference design of ATI which uses a 2+1 power phases, MSI R4830 series graphics cards is equipped with 4+1 power phases, doubling the GPU power phase. This reduces the power load of each phase for a more stable power supply, which again reduces the working temperature, increases the lifespan, enhances the overclocking possibilities of the card.

SSC (Solid State Choke)
Ordinary chokes produces a lot of noise, therefore MSI is first to use the form-in-one Solid State Choke. The SSC’s produces no noise and are also more durable. The iron core of the Solid State Choke provides a more stable high-current platform while overclocking.

MSI Seaweed Blade fan
MSI R4830 series graphics card comes with the MSI Seaweed Blade fan, special shaped blades makes it possible to have a more concentrated air flow. It provides a higher air pressure with the same air flow. MSI does not use a high-speed fan on R4830, but it achieves the same cooling effect by enhancing the overall cooling efficiency.

MSI High-Definition Experience
Aside from the high performance while gaming, low CPU load while playing high definition content becomes more important. MSI R4830 series graphics card offer an advanced built-in UVD (Universal Video Decoder) video decoder core, which makes 100% complete hardware acceleration to the MPEG-2/VC-1/H.264 movie format. Furthermore, it supports Dual Stream Decode, which can simultaneously decode two movies at the same time. Even if the user utilizes an entry level CPU, the system can playback the Blu-Ray movie discs properly. MSI R4830 series can directly upscale conventional DVD movies to high-resolution to ensure higher quality DVD image.
