Glide Keyboard; when the keyboard became a mouse
Written by Andreas G 30 October 2008 21:25

Mouse and keyboard are the obvious PC controller since the launch of the Personal Computer. Even if the development of both the mouse and the keyboard is moving forward, they both use the same basic concept. Though there are those who have tried to think outside the box and one of them is Weston Boege. He has designed a concept keyboard called Glide Keyboard and beside an exciting layout there is major difference between it and other keyboards, it is also a mouse!

The idea is to have the wrists resting on the lower portion of the keyboard where you will also find mouse buttons and a scroll, to be maneuvered using your thumbs. Then you simply move the entire keyboard to move the mouse pointer since there is an optical sensor beneath the keyboard, just like a regular optical mouse. The keyboard rests on four low-friction feet that will allow for some easy maneuvers.

Even if we have a hard time imagining that this would work well in practice it is always good to see that the both mouse and keyboard still have a lot of evolving left to do. Who knows, maybe the mouse and keyboard combo will disappear in the future, but we're sooner guessing advanced touchscreens as the successor. It doesn't seem very likely that we will see Glide keyboard on the market anytime soon.
