AMD pushes Phenom II, Deneb, above 6GHz at -185°C
Written by Andreas G 20 November 2008 22:37

AMD decided to takes things in its own hands during an event in Austin, Texas. It took the unreleased Phenom II, based on the quad-core Deneb architecture, and slapped a pot suitable for exotic on it. After lowering the temperature to -185°C and raising the voltage to somewhere north of 1.9V the processor was able to move north of 6GHz. We don't know the exact frequency. At this time this is actually higher than what Nehalem can do.

No cameras were allowed so there are no pictures available. In a recent slide AMD claimed that up to 4GHz is more than possible with Deneb and while we're not certain this is telling the whole truth, you should not be surprised if you find more than a fair share of Phenom II models running at 3.6GHz and above 24/7.

AMD did show air-cooled systems running at around 4GHz (~1.6V)though. You will have to wait until January to play with the AM2+ version, while the AM3 models should arrive 1½ month later when the AM3 platform is ready to launch. Our previous reports of Deneb being a good overclocker was met with some skepticism, which we of course understood, we're just glad AMD is coming through and launching a product that is competitive.
