DreamHack Winter 2008: jDome for the (ultimate?) in-game experience
Written by Andreas G 01 December 2008 12:03

The last DreamHack of the year is over and as usual it has been a mix of LAN and convent where a number of manufacturers have been showing off their latest products. We've been covering some of the events at DreamHack, but focused on the overclocking event Battle of the North which has brought several 3DMark Vantage records. We have looked around among the many display booths and found a number of interesting products and companies worth bringing up. One of these is jDome, who is working on a pretty unique product.

The concept is about giving gamers a heightened gaming experienced by making them feel as a part of the game. They accomplish this by projecting the picture on a dome that surrounds the gamer. There are still some work to do, mainly in the area of usability and furnishing (a big dome with a projector a couple of meters away are not the easiest to place in the living room, Torsten Sandbäck at jDome agreed.

jDome pose a real challenge for interior decorators

After trying some driving games in the dome there was no doubt that the jDome as potential, unfortunately we can't say the same about the driver...

One of few times all cars was on the road, but then again it's just a game!

Innovative products are always interesting to investigate and jDome certainly has potential, and if they can resolve the drawbacks mentioned above they have a product that should attract more than a few buyers looking for a better in-game experience. We will keep an eye on the development of jDome and keep you posted on any updates.
