AMD releases open-source R600/700 3D code
Written by Andreas G 08 January 2009 11:37

Right before the end of the year AMD finally released the R600/700 3D code to the open-source community. This means that the development of an open-source driver for the R600 driver can being, I.e. proper Linux support. Since earlier AMD has released R300/400/500 3D code after announcing a new found love for the open-source community back in September 2007.

Excerpt from article;
"The other good news is that with the R600 series they made sure there was sufficient documentation coverage by first writing the software support to find out what was needed, instead of finding out later they hadn't released enough documentation to enable the 3D engine or they ended up releasing too much documentation than what most open-source developers would actually use. The code they are releasing is in a working state, but is currently meant for developer usage."

Phoronix has published a three page article covering the progress of the R600 code release up till December 29th. It summarizes the hardships of cleaning up the AMD documentation and getting it cleared for release by the lead software and hardware engineers. A good read for anyone interested in the development of open-source 3D drivers for AMD's two latest generation of graphics cards.
