Intel Moblin 2 Alpha available for download
Written by Andreas G 02 February 2009 21:56

Intel's netbook operating system Moblin 2 we reported on last week is now available for public download. The operating system is currently at an early Alpha stage and is anything but final. Moblin 2 Alpha will still offer a taste of Intel's superslim operating system. Moblin 2 is Linux-based and thus open source, which is certainly not a good thing for Microsoft, targeting computers sporting Intel's Atom processor. The focus is on performance and usability with not so powerful systems.

Intel is hoping to boot the entire operating system in less than 5 seconds with an SSD-equipped netbook, regular Linux operating systems require 6 times more time.

Moblin 2 Alpha uses the Xfce desktop environment that will be replaced by a new interface built with OpenedHands' Clutter as a base. The new interface will be more functional and optimized for mobile devices.

Those who want to test Moblin 2 Alpha can download the source code or compiled archives from the official website. being an Alpha operating system it should hardly be used as the primary OS, but may very well be worth testing for those looking for a new environment with their netbooks.
