Harddrive manufacturer Seagate launched a new series of energy efficient harddrives called Barracuda LP (Low Power) that with 5900 RPM will not only make the drive efficient but also quiet. According to Seagate's own tests, its new Barracuda LP series consumes at most 5.6W during load, and drops to 3W when idle. The level of noise is said to be 26dB during file transfers for the 2TB model, while Western Digital's 2TB Caviar Green will reach 29dBA.
Just like WD, Seagate offers the new Barracuda LP series with 500GB platters for a maximal capacity of 2TB. The price of the flagship will be around $330, which is slightly more than Western Digital's 2TB Caviar Green. Whether Seagate's LP models are worth the additional cost is hard to say for now.
