The HDMI format is used frequently among home cinema enthusiasts but also with PCs. The format will soon be updated to version 1.4. One of the biggest differences between HDMI and the also common DVI interface is that the former can also carry audio signals in the same cable. More detailed information on HDMI 1.4 has now appeared and it looks like the audio and video signals will have to make room for network signals. With the new technology HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC) compatible TVs and other devices can connect to the Internet and local network through the HDMI cable.
HDMI 1.4 will require new cables though and they will launch in two versions. One for simple solution and and one for the really high data transfer rates. The latter will be able to carry 100Mbps Ethernet and extremely High Definition video, 4096x2160 pixels at 30Hz. The new standard will also offer better support for streaming audio signals and a technology that automatically optimizes the picture depending on the material.
