Moblin v2.0 beta available
Written by Andreas G 26 May 2009 20:21

Moblin is an operating system built from scratch to run on less powerful computers, specifically so called netbooks. Processor manufacturer Intel, that dominates the netbook market with its Atom processors, realized early on that the performance of its platform wasn't exactly optimal for higher loads, and that netbooks are not used in the same way as a full-worthy computer.

It started the Moblin project to develop an operating system that offer sufficient functionality while being very fast, especially boot fast.

Moblin 2.0 Beta with its new M-Zone menu

When we first reported on Moblin 2.0 Alpha it was the boot times that was in focus. A Moblin netbook would boot in less than 10 seconds, from button push to usability. Something Intel hopes to lower to 5 seconds.

Anyhow, Moblin 2.0 Beta has launched and the developers have made a lot of improvements to the Linux operating system since our last visit.

A graphical user interface will make it easier and more pleasant to use the operating system. Together with Intel's coming Pine Trail platform Moblin could become a really interesting creation, especially since all code is open source.

More information can be found at Moblin.org where you can also download the new beta of Moblin 2.0.
